God in the Public Schools

Kids Club

I never thought I would see an openly Evangelical Christian after schools program in a liberal state such as California.  But our church, GrX, runs such an after schools program at Dylan’s former school, Ponderosa Elementary.  The fact that such a program exists is a testimony to the vision and relationship building skills of Helen Chae, Pastor David Chae’s wife.  The Chae’s live in Ponderosa and have committed themselves to supporting Ponderosa Elementary.  Helen Chae has a great relationship with the principal, Meg Jackson, a kind and obviously open-minded person.

Yesterday was the first day of Kids Club.  Ji Seon volunteered to lead the Grade 1 group.  This year’s leader of Kids Club is Sara Chon and she asked me to volunteer so I agreed.  I ended up not doing much, just registering children and providing snacks.

Dylan and Isaac are both in the Kindergarten group.  They made an exception for Isaac who is too young and for Dylan who does not attend Ponderosa since Ji Seon is volunteering.  Yesterday they had a raffle (they do this every week with the tickets children get to encourage participation) and Isaac won one of the raffles.  He picked a Spider-Man water bottle.

I think over sixty children showed up.  And these sixty children were Europen, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, African.  And many of these children are not from Christian homes.  These children worshipped God with songs, played games, did crafts, and ate snacks.  Overall I think they had fun and it’s just amazing what God is doing here in this community.

This is the second song the children song, You Are My All in All.

You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all
Seeking You as a precious jewel
Lord, to give up I’d be a fool
You are my all in all

Taking my sin, my cross, my shame
Rising up again I bless Your name
You are my all in all
When I fall down You pick me up
When I am dry You fill my cup
You are my all in all

Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name
Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name

You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all
Seeking You as a precious jewel
Lord, to give up I’d be a fool
You are my all in all

Taking my sin, my cross, my shame
Rising up again I bless Your name
You are my all in all
When I fall down You pick me up
When I get dry You fill my cup
You are my all in all

Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name
Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name
